Bad breath is an embarrassing problem that is quite common. Possible reasons for bad breath are: smoking or chewing tobacco, dry mouth, gum disease, diabetes, poor home care, and from stomach problems to name a few.
Initially, Dr. Gary Klein will screen the patient as to the possible cause for bad breath. If there is a dental reason, there are a number of different solutions that can be used. Generally, people do not realize how gum disease can have a considerable influence on how bad a person’s breath can be, because of active infection.
We will also check whether extensive tooth decay, loose or open spaces between teeth, and/or poor oral hygiene may be contributing to the problem. We will recommend in-office treatments for these problems.
Fortunately, we do have effective solutions. After bringing the tooth/teeth and gums to optimal health,we will dispense a tongue scraper, which is an effective tool in removing residue from the tongue. As well, we will send the patient home with a dissolvable probiotic for the tongue that is most successful in treating halitosis.
Please remember that if there is a medical reason for bad breath, the patient will also be referred to a medical doctor after being screened for any contributing dental problems. Contact our dental office at St. Clair and Dufferin today for a checkup appointment.
